Kuldhara - A haunted village near Jaisalmer

Mystery and the fear of the unknown have always stirred and intensified our curiosity to know more about such topics. This is the reason why ghost towns or haunted places are one of the most visited tourist places in India, irrespective of the associated fear. Haunted places are mostly abandoned and cursed, or places that have witnessed tyranny and blood in the past.
Rajasthan displays a picture of mystifying desert kingdom with many glorious forts, palaces and villages. Apart from this, Rajasthan has a marvellous history, culture, and legacy. This state has many renowned tourist places. But one more thing can be added to Rajasthan; its various abandoned and haunted places, palaces and villages. One such place worth mentioning is the village of Kuldhara.

Situated about 15 kms to the west of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, is the hamlet of Kuldhara. It looks nothing different from any other village in the region, with narrow lanes and houses opening into the street, except for one thing – it is completely uninhabited. The last time people lived in this village was way back in the 18th century. Home to the prosperous clan of Paliwal Brahmins from 12th century, Kuldhara was a thriving township like many other in the state. However, on an ill-fated night in the year 1825, all the villagers suddenly deserted their homes and vanished into the night. Why the villagers left, where they went and where they settled down, is a mystery till date.

According to the legend, the evil eyes of Salim Singh, the powerful and debauched Prime Minister of the state, fell on the daughter of the village head and he desired to marry her by force. He threatened the village with grave consequences if they did not adhere to his wish. Instead of submitting to the order of the tyrant, the Paliwals held a council and people of 85 villages left their ancestral homes and vanished. But this was not all; before leaving, they put a curse on Kuldhara that no one will ever be able to settle in their village thereafter. To this date, the village remains barren; left almost the same as its inhabitants had left it centuries ago. It is also said that people who have tried to stay there at night have been chased away by strange paranormal phenomenon.

Another, more plausible reason can be that Salim Singh raised the taxes to such an extent that it became un-viable for the local community to survive in the village; and they thus decided to migrate to greener pastures. However, people love the former story; after all who doesn’t want a tinge of romance and mystery in their tales!

The first look of the village is very haunting and sad with ruins all over. On reaching this village, you will be welcomed by a sand stone gate built just before the village was abandoned. Once in the village Kuldhara, you will feel as if you have stepped into an entirely different world. Wide dusty roads and sand stone houses on either side of roads depict the architectural marvel of the Paliwal Brahmins. Few houses have been restored and these restored houses display courtyards, kitchen, along with other rooms. The Kuldhara village also has temples.

Recently, Paranormal Society of Delhi decided to unravel the mystery behind the village of Kuldhara's spirit. Delhi's Paranormal Society of Delhi reached Kuldhara under the leadership of Gaurav Tiwari on Saturday. A brave team of 18 members decided to spend an entire night inside the village along with 10-12 other people. The team spent 12 long horrifying hours inside the village and experienced some strange activities.

The team equipped with their high-tech electronic equipments scanned the entire village and encountered really strange activities. From moving shadows, haunting voices to hand imprints of children on cars; the team members lived through one of their scariest nights.

One of the members revealed that he felt someone touching his shoulder from behind. When he turned back to see who it was, he found no one.

The team used a highly sophisticated equipment to communicate with ghosts and spirits. The equipment, named 'Ghost Box', was used to ask questions from the spirits. The spirits responded and even told their names.

The team had a K-2 metre device which is used to measure change in surroundings temperature. The device recorded a temperature of 41 Degree Celsius at one location and as it was moved a few steps ahead, the temperature instantly dropped to 31 Degree Celsius.

The team used LASER rays and found unexplained moving shadows.

The team's main objective is to dispel fear from the minds of the people. The society has surveyed over 500 locations all across the nation. These are the places which are considered to be haunted by the locals and it is believed that no one can spend the night in these villages.

In the beginning, the team came across a lot of strange activities, but as their confidence increased these strange activities diminished, the team found.

The team could not concretely establish or deny the ghost-phenomenon, but they sure did helped the villagers dismissed the notion associated with the village.
